Small businesses can now use HMRC’s online deadline checker to identify relevant tax filing and payment dates and add them to most calendar applications. The tool gives you deadlines based on the information you enter, which can make it easier to plan ahead, protect cash flow and avoid preventable late-filing or late-payment penalties. It currently covers:

  1. Construction Industry Scheme (CIS) contractors.
  2. PAYE employers.
  3. Self Assessment.
  4. VAT.

You do not need to sign in, and HMRC says the information used to calculate your deadlines is not sent to HMRC. The tool also lets you print the dates or add them to a calendar; iPhone and iPad users should use Safari when adding dates to Apple Calendar. Remember that a calendar reminder does not replace checking your HMRC account, notices or correspondence, particularly if your circumstances change or HMRC gives you a different deadline.

Before you use the tool

Have your accounting period dates, filing method and payment method to hand, as these details can affect the result. HMRC says the check takes about five minutes. Once the dates are generated, add them to your calendar and set an earlier internal reminder so there is time to complete records, resolve queries and allow for bank processing.

Useful dates to keep in mind

For Self Assessment for the 2025–26 tax year, you generally need to tell HMRC by 5 October 2026 if you need to file and have not already registered. Paper returns are normally due by 31 October 2026, while online returns and payment of tax owed are normally due by 31 January 2027. If you make payments on account, a second payment may also be due on 31 July.

CIS contractors normally need to submit a monthly return by the 19th of the month following the end of each tax month. If no payments have been made, a nil return is generally required unless the contractor has told HMRC that they have temporarily stopped using subcontractors.

If you are unsure which taxes apply, have missed a deadline or expect difficulty paying on time, seek advice as early as possible. We can help you map the deadlines that apply to your business, check what information is needed and plan the next steps. Please feel free to contact us.
