HMRC advises that it is accepting tax relief claims for employed workers who are working from home for reasons relating to the pandemic during 2021 to 2022.

Over half a million employed workers who were told to work at home by their employer because of COVID-19 have received tax relief on increased household costs directly related to additional time being spent at home.

Are you eligible?

To check whether you are eligible and to make a claim, go to the Check if you can claim work related expenses section on the gov.uk website.

How much could you receive?

HMRC’s Director General for Customer Services said that those who have already received tax relief on working from home expenses have reduced their Income Tax bill this year by up to £125.

Eligible customers can claim tax relief based on their tax rate. E.g., if an employed worker pays the basic tax rate of 20% and claims tax relief on £6 a week, they’d receive £1.20 a week in tax relief (20% of £6 a week) towards the cost of their household bills.

It’s worth noting that HMRC will accept backdated claims for up to four years. A lump sum payment will be made for any successful backdated claims.
